When Agni arrived at Vishnu's abode, he found the great preserver in meditation, his consciousness spread across all the worlds he protects. No weapon could touch him because he hid behind the appearance of virtue.
But when Vishnu releases the Sudarshan Chakra, it cuts through illusion like dawn cuts through night. The chakra sees not what appears to be, but what truly is. Kalanemi's disguise falls away like old clothes, and dharma is restored.
From that day forward, the chakra becomes Vishnu's constant companion. In his battles with Hiranyakashipu, it blazes with protective fury. When he faces Ravana's armies, it spins with the precision of cosmic justice. During the great war at Kurukshetra, it ensures that dharma prevails even in the darkest hour.
The Deeper Meaning
But the chakra is more than a weapon — it is a teaching. Its circular form represents the wheel of time, the cycle of karma, the eternal return of consequences to their source. Its spinning motion shows us that dharma is not static but dynamic, always moving, always responding to the needs of the moment.
The Bhagavad Gita reminds us: Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata — whenever dharma declines, the divine manifests to restore it. The Sudarshan Chakra is the physical form of this promise, the guarantee that truth will always have the power to defend itself.
Some scholars say the chakra has a thousand spokes, each one representing a different aspect of dharma. Others claim it has no spokes at all, being pure energy given form. Both are correct — the chakra appears as it needs to appear, teaches what needs to be taught, protects what needs protection.

Today, in temples across India, devotees still see the Sudarshan Chakra spinning in Vishnu's hand. In Tirupati, in Dwarka, in countless village shrines, the ancient gift of Agni continues to inspire and protect. The chakra reminds us that true power serves dharma, not the ego.
